We've been recognized as one of the Great Neighborhoods in America.

Our downtown has been named to the American Planning Association’s (APA) 2019 list of Great Places in America. Downtown Lee's Summit is one of only four neighborhoods nationally to receive this honor.

THIRTY YEARS IN THE MAKING

This recognition belongs to everyone who has contributed to Downtown Lee's Summit’s incredible revitalization and transformation over the past 30 years. It all started back in 1989 when a group of residents, business owners and civic leaders came together to form Downtown Lee's Summit Main Street. Inc.

Downtown Lee’s Summit, Missouri Named One of 13 Great Places by the American Planning Association (APA)

In the program’s 12th year, APA Recognizes 13 Great Neighborhoods, Streets and Public Spaces

Washington, D.C.— The American Planning Association (APA) has named Downtown Lee’s Summit, Missouri, as one of four Great Neighborhoods on APA’s annual Great Places in America list, which starts the countdown to National Community Planning Month in October.

“The beauty, charm, and culture of our great city is best exemplified in the heart of Lee’s Summit, our historic downtown,” said Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird. “We are thankful for the vision of those past and present that invested their time, money, passion and talents to develop and implement a downtown master plan.”

APA’s Great Places in America program recognizes the streets, neighborhoods and public spaces in the United States demonstrating exceptional character, quality, and planning—attributes that enrich communities, facilitate economic growth, and inspire others around the country. The Great Neighborhoods, Great Streets and Great Public Spaces of 2019 are places that are unique and exemplary in their success stories of revitalization, cultural identity, and strong community connection.

“The Great Neighborhoods recognized this year demonstrate the importance of planning in creating vibrant and sustainable communities,” said Kurt Christiansen, FAICP, APA president. “The success of Downtown Lee’s Summit celebrates the importance of a truly collaborative planning process between community stakeholders, business leaders and citizens alike.”

In the late 20th century, declining investment in the downtown and growing sprawl led to high vacancy rates for Downtown Lee’s Summit. In response, business leaders and citizen advocates created a partnership that would lay the foundation for the city’s next 30 years of revitalization efforts. With an emphasis on preservation and reinvestment, the Downtown Lee’s Summit community has come together to prioritize long-term sustainability to bring the current vacancy rate down to zero percent.

The community will come together to celebrate Lee’s Summit’s designation as a Great Neighborhood in America on October 26, 2019, at Howard Station Park at 11 am following the annual Boos, Barks & Badges Halloween Parade.

In addition to Lee’s Summit, APA has also recognized the following Great Neighborhoods in 2019:

  • Downtown Patchogue Village – Patchogue, New York
  • Short North Arts District – Columbus, Ohio
  • Historic Downtown Delaware – Delaware, Ohio

Since launching the Great Places in America program in 2007, APA has recognized 303 neighborhoods, streets and public spaces around the country. Designees are selected annually and represent the gold standard for a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a vision for the future.

For the sixth year, members of the public can suggest their favorite public space, neighborhood, or street to earn a “People’s Choice” designation. Throughout October, individuals can offer suggestions via APA’s social media channels using the hashtag #APAgreatplaces. APA will select five finalists that the public can vote on via APA’s website. The “People’s Choice” winner will be announced on October 30, 2019.

Questions about the Award?

Great Places in America is the flagship program of the American Planning Association (APA) that celebrates places of exemplary character, quality, and planning. Places are selected annually and represent the gold standard in terms of having a true sense of place, cultural and historic interest, community involvement, and a vision for tomorrow – and most importantly, a legacy of planning.

Launched in 2007, APA has recognized 303 neighborhoods, streets, public spaces.

This year, 13 designees were selected across the three categories to ensure a greater focus on each location, and to more extensively celebrate and acknowledge the characteristics of each unique place that contribute to creating communities of lasting value.

Downtown Lee’s Summit is one of only 4 neighborhoods nationally to be named to APA's 2019 list of Great Places in America. Joining Downtown Lee’s Summit in the 2019 Great Neighborhoods category are:

APA has a list of guidelines that focus on important principles. For the Great Neighborhoods category, some of the criteria include:

  • Balancing the competing needs of different users; offering options for all residents of the community, regardless of age, preferred mode of transportation and provide a mixture of uses and services.
  • Showcases local architecture, landscaping, and urban design, and stand out from the norm.
  • Great places may serve as important local economic drivers.
  • Great places encourage social activity by serving as the host of events, community programs, festivals, and more.
  • Great places reflect the local culture and history of the greater community.
  • Great places often employ green infrastructure to promote sustainability.

These guidelines are considered in addition to other important local factors such as geography, population, demographics, and setting (urban, suburban, rural).

Nominations for Great Places are received from APA members, staff, professionals with experience in the planning field, and the general public.

Nominations then go through a rigorous review process by a committee of APA leaders who are professional planners to determine this year’s designees. APA gathers input and research from a number of sources including our local APA members, media outlets, local planning outlets, videos and historical information.

There are many thousands of Great Places in the U.S. that are eligible for this designation. This year APA took an in-depth look at submissions from more than 39 states.

APA receives nominations from a number of sources including the public, members of APA, planners, or even someone who has a favorite travel destination. They make it a practice to maintain the privacy of the nominator.

Planning does not have a start and end point. It is an ongoing process. The purpose of creating a plan is to help encourage the community to think about where it stands today, and what it wants to be in the future.

The revitalization and transformation of Downtown Lee’s Summit is deeply rooted in engagement and collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholders. Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street was organized in 1989 in partnership with City leaders, business owners and residents to transform the heart of their community.

A number of planning initiatives have taken place over the last 30 years, beginning with the Vision of the Heart plan that was adopted by City Council in 1993. Previous downtown plans and studies can be viewed at downtownls.org/development
