History in the Park

Lee's Summit, MO: In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Historical Society of Lee’s Summit & Museum and Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street have partnered to present “History in the Park” on Saturday, May 5 from 2pm-4pm in Howard Station Park. Students from Lee’s Summit North International Baccalaureate History class and members of the Lee’s Summit North Speech and Debate Team led by teacher and coach Ben Jewell, will present on the history of Lee’s Summit. Historic photos and stories will be on display courtesy of Historical Society of Lee’s Summit & Museum.

Walking history tour books will be available to purchase for $10 and proceeds go to benefit the Lee’s Summit History Museum. The Museum located at 220 SW Main Street will be open 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, May 5.

“History in the Park” is part of a statewide effort, “Celebrate Preservation Month”, led by Missouri Main Street Connection to make Missouri residents more aware of the state’s unique cultural resources and promote good preservation practices as a highly successful economic revitalization tool. Gayla Roten, MMSC State Director, said, “Through this project, we hope to encourage Missouri citizens of all ages to learn more about the history surrounding them, discover new sites and communities, and understand the importance of preserving our history and historic places for generations to come.”

About the Historical Society of Lee’s Summit & Museum

The Historical Society of Lee's Summit & Museum is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the community's rich cultural heritage. The Historical Society of Lee's Summit maintains a museum in the 1939 Post Office in downtown Lee's Summit on West Main Street. The museum originally opened October 4, 1991 in the south end of the historic 1905 train depot. On April 22, 2015 it re-opened in its current home. The museum houses a number of historic artifacts, maps, and photos of early Lee's Summit. Operating hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.
