Fourth Fridays Art Walk Features Local Art, Theatre, and Fun for All Ages
Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street will host its last Fourth Fridays Art Walk of the 2024 season on Friday, August 23rd from 5-8 p.m. Attendees are invited to explore pop-ups from local artists in 24 locally-owned businesses in Downtown Lee’s Summit.
The Art Walk features plenty of free activities to provide an evening of fun for the whole family. Alyssa’s Wishes will host a free “Kindness Rocks!” rock painting activity in Howard Station Park. A crew of volunteers, lovingly called “The A-Team,” has partnered with Downtown Main Street to foster community connections through art. Families delight in painting and hiding rocks nearly as much as they enjoy finding these treasures throughout the city. “I love our town and I’m grateful for the chance to share our story while serving our community in Alyssa’s honor,” shared Karen Houck, the program’s founder. Rachael Fitch, the Creative Content & Design Coordinator at Downtown Main Street, is the maestro who brings the magic of the Art Walk to life. Each month features a theme to tie in additional activities for families. August’s theme is “It’s All Fun and Games.” Families are invited to build oversized origami at Art School KC, and play yard games in the alley behind Blue Heron Design. Mural artist Emily Alvarez will do a live painting in Howard Station Park. KD’s Books will host children’s activities followed by an Open Mic Night at 8:00 p.m.
Fine artist Sarah Frey will set up shop at All A’Bloom Flowers & Gifts. Her pieces feature local landmarks and landscapes from her travels, carefully painted in oil or acrylic on wood. While sharing how her pieces resonate most with fans, Sarah said “It’s kind of magical when someone feels drawn to a particular painting or print, and you can see that little twinkle in their eye - like maybe it was made just for them. The general feedback I’ve received is that my work gives a sense of calm, which is lovely to hear.” For a deeper look into Sarah’s work, follow her on Instagram @sarahruthfrey.
Summit Theatre Group will perform a free show at 6:30 p.m. in Howard Station Park as part of the concert series Music in the Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket or a lawn chair to enjoy the show. The Fourth Fridays Art Walk is presented by Aristocrat Motors, and sponsored by Saint Luke’s East Hospital and the City of Lee’s Summit Cultural Arts Division. Music in the Park is presented by Budget Blinds, and sponsored by Security Bank of Kansas City. For more information, please visit downtownls.org/events
