Missouri Main Street Connection Awarded the Main Street Best in Show Legacy Award to Green Street
Missouri Main Street Connection awarded Green Street the Main Street Best in Show Legacy Award during Missouri’s Premier Downtown Revitalization Conference’s Evening of Excellence Legacy Awards Ceremony and Dinner at Veridian Events.
Green Street received this legacy award for its impact on Downtown Lee’s Summit as a 2.76-acre farmers market, performance venue, and gathering place for the community as well as visitors.
As a dream of Downtown Lee’s Summit since 1993, Green Street, a home for the farmers market was originally included in the “Vision of the Heart” plan that stakeholders adopted and detailed a block-by-block approach to bringing investment back to Lee’s Summit’s downtown core.
This project has survived decades of changing priorities, disruptions, and delays in acquiring the necessary downtown property, to become one of the most impressive farmers markets in Missouri. The 17,140 sq. ft. Green Street Market is just one component of this vibrant gathering space as it also includes Green Street Lawn a 9,650 sq. ft. versatile, outdoor, canopy-covered turf lawn and Saint Luke’s Grove an outdoor destination with an immersive children’s playground, open seating areas, a giant whirligig art installation, and a plaza with artistically designed “wickets.”
During its opening weekend in 2025, Green Street attracted 12,500 visitors in four days.. Overall, the greater downtown saw 22,500 visitors that Saturday, up from an average of 11,200 on previous Saturdays in August. That is an impressive start, and when combined with late season market attendance as high as five times the average shopper totals and an increased dwell time nearly doubling to 45-51 minutes, it is clear to see that the market is driving foot traffic which downtown businesses depend on.
Green Street is a project deserving the Main Street Best in Show Legacy Award as a once-in-a-generation transformation of Downtown Lee’s Summit made possible because Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, the city, the community, and other partners persisted over decades for the just the right time.
